Freemasonry means different things to each of those who join. For some, it’s about making new friends and acquaintances. For others, it’s about being able to help deserving causes – making a contribution to family and for society. But for many, it is an enjoyable hobby.
Freemasonry is one of the world’s oldest and largest non-religious, non-political, fraternal and charitable organisation. It teaches self-knowledge through participation in a progression of ceremonies. Members are expected to be of high moral standing and are encouraged to speak openly about Freemasonry.

The Right Worshipful Provincial Grand Master R.W.Bro. Paul Tarrant accepting the donation of Hutton Lodge 4640 from our Worshipful Master W.Bro. John Allum, to the Provincial Charity program "£250 for 250" for the 250th anniversary of the Province.
Four times a year, on the second Saturday of February, April, October, and December, our lodge convenes at Hutton Masonic Hall in Shenfield. Bathed in the warm light of afternoon, these meetings are a time for reflection, ceremony, and the strengthening of the bonds that unite us.
Our lodge welcomes men from all walks of life, each bringing a unique perspective and experience that enriches the fabric of our brotherhood. Through shared values and mutual respect, we cultivate not only personal growth but also lasting friendships forged in the crucible of shared experiences.
Integrity, kindness, honesty, and fairness are the pillars upon which Hutton Lodge stands. These are not mere words, but the foundation for our interactions within the lodge and as we extend a helping hand to the community we call home.
Hutton Lodge's story unfolds like a testament to fraternal vision and community spirit. In 1924, local professionals and businessmen, united by their masonic connection, envisioned a lodge that would cater to the growing interests of Hutton. Their ambition extended beyond the lodge itself, aiming to create a space that could serve both masonic gatherings and the wider community.
This vision materialized with the official consecration of the lodge by the esteemed RW Provincial Grand Master for Essex, Lord Lambourne, in September 1924. But the story takes another turn just months later. Demonstrating remarkable foresight, six of the founding members established Hutton Masonic Hall Limited in August 1924. Their unwavering commitment was directed towards securing a permanent home for the lodge – a dedicated Masonic Temple. Through tireless fundraising efforts, they laid the foundation stone with ceremony in July 1925. Within a year, their vision culminated in the consecration of the Masonic Temple in January 1926. This marked the successful completion of their grand plan, a lasting symbol of their dedication to both Freemasonry and the well-being of the Hutton community.

Organised Freemasonry, as we know it today, began with the founding of the first Grand Lodge on 24 June 1717 at the Goose and Gridiron Ale House in St Paul's Churchyard.
RW.Bro. Thomas Fitzgeorge Dunkerley, the originator of Provincial Grand Lodges, Provincial Grand Master for Essex. This Brother played a very conspicuous part in the history of Freemasonry in Essex, and is believed to have aided in reconstructing and modernizing the lectures and ritual. In 1776 he represented the Province of Essex at the dedication of Freemasons’ Hall, London, and in 1777, with a view to promoting the Craft in those Counties, he was appointed Provincial Grand Master of Dorset, Gloucestershire, Herefordshire, Somersetshire, Southampton and the Isle of Wight, and Grand Superintendent of the same Provinces; and also of Kent, Nottingham, Surrey, Suffolk, Sussex and Warwick, still retaining his connection with Essex.
